With spring sports underway, New Media Broadcasters got to speak with Havre track and field coach Kari Filius about her outlook for the 2025 season.
“The girls’ team, I think everyone is back except for one that placed at state last year and that was on the varsity team last year,” Filius said. “The girls’ are going to be real strong this year.”
“And the boys’, we lost a lot of senior boys who did well last year,” Filius continued. “But they’re looking pretty good, too. They’ve matured and they’ve gotten stronger.”
“It’s going to be an exciting year for the boys’ and for the girls’,” Filius said. “We look like we’re going to have another good season.”
Havre track and field got off to a great start for the 2025 season. The girls’ team won the Cut Bank Invite, while the boys’ took third. Filius said despite not having her full complement of athletes that she was excited about what the leadership shown.
“Well, we normally don’t get this early track meet because of the weather” Filius said. “It was super windy there, but the kids competed real hard.”
“We had some really good, strong performances, even in the wind, so I was really happy to see that,” Filius continued.
“Our older kids are really good leaders and they showed the younger kids, ‘It’s cold and windy, but we’re still here and we’re going to work hard,'” Filius said. “The younger kids did well, so I was really pleased.”
The momentum will try to be salvaged this week when the team travels to Frenchtown, where the forecasted weather should be in favor of a good weekend worth of competition. Filius said that even though she will again be without a full roster that there is still reason for optimism.
“This weekend, the Frenchtown weather looks really good,” Filius said. “However, we’re (going to) be even a little bit less with our varsity kids because we have the (Hi-Line Basketball Invitational Tournament) and we have small school proms.”
“But the ones (who) are going, it’s going to be a great day,” Filius said. “We still have a really good group going.”
Havre’s track and field teams will be in Frenchtown on Saturday. New Media Broadcasters will have results once the activities wrap up.
