MSU-Northern football wrapped up its spring ball festivities by having a public viewing this past Saturday. New Media Broadcasters caught up with head coach Jerome Souers after it was all done and he said what stood out not only about the day, but also about spring ball as a whole with the group that is currently in the building.
“The advantages of spring practice are (that) you don’t have to compete on Saturday,” Souers said. “Our preparation is allowed to go slower.”
“We can teach more in the details fundamentally (and) make sure our guys are sound in the things that they’re doing,” Souers continued. “We’re knocking off the rust on a lot of guys. A lot of guys haven’t tackled in a while.”
“We’re working on a lot of those fundamentals on the 15th day (of spring ball) to see how far we’ve come,” Souers said. “I was pleased with the overall improvement of our football team.”
Northern football will focus on academics before the 2024-25 school year wraps up. Souers said that the main focus for him in the coming months will be to sure up the Lights roster, which already has 35 confirmed signings from the 2025 recruiting class.
“We’re recruiting for guys that can help us this fall,” Souers said. “There’s a lot of drop-down activity. There’s a lot of athletes that are hitting the (transfer) portal. There’s a lot of guys that have nowhere to go.”
“So our recruiting will continue probably right up until the beginning of August,” Souers continued. “Our program is moving upwards. I love the trajectory of our improvement.”
“I’m excited about what’s happening in our program and I think our players are, too,” Souers said.
