Homestead and Long Term Rental Exemptions

(Havre) – The 2025 Montana Legislature passed property tax relief for property owners, with the homestead and long term rental exemptions. Jason Boggess Regional Manager for the Montana Department of Revenue explains how tax rates with these exemptions work.

“Both the residential homestead exemption and the long-term rental exemption are based on a tax tier system, and it goes off of what the median sales price in the state of Montana is, and that’s three-seventy-eight. And so, any property that qualifies for either one of those exemptions will be taxed at point seven six percent of the market value and if it’s over that, then it will go up to the point nine.

If you received a $400 tax rebate in the Fall of 2025 your property is already registered for the Homestead or Long Term Rental Exemptions. If you did not apply for or receive this refund, then you must apply for either exemption by March 1st at homestead.mt.gov
