HELENA – In conjunction with the Montana Congressional delegation, the Montana 250th Commission is participating in a year-long initiative entitled “Montana Innovators,” featuring monthly spotlights on Montanans of note – both current day and historical figures – worthy of recognition as we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. “Montana Innovators” will feature short statements in the Congressional Record that help Montanans learn more about individuals who have accomplished great things, made significant contributions to society, and left Montana and America in a better place. Each month, the Commission has chosen a theme or category to focus on; for February, it is Mining. The 2025 Montana Legislature established February 9th as Montana Mining Day annually “to commemorate when the territorial government adopted the state motto” of Oro y Plata (gold and silver).
U.S. Senator Steve Daines honored the workers of the Stillwater and East Boulder Platinum Palladium Mines in Stillwater and Sweet Grass Counties. “Each day, miners and refiners came to work and continued to produce this important metal for the country,” Daines said in his statement. “Montanans are united to supporting our miners and combatting illegal Russian dumping. U.S. Senator Tim Sheehy chose to honor Montana businessman Dennis Washington. “Dennis Washington made the decision to restart operations at the dormant Continental Pit. What began as a potential salvage effort became a long-term commitment: investing in Montana miners, modernizing equipment, and restoring confidence in one of the world’s most historic mining districts,” Sheehy said. “Because of leaders like Dennis Washington–and the hard-working men and women of Butte–Montana mining continues to power opportunity for the next generation.” To view Senator Sheehy’s February statement, click here.
U.S. Representative Ryan Zinke honored the World Museum of Mining in Butte with his statement. “On the 250th anniversary of the United States, it is important to look back at our country’s history and the people who built it,” Zinke said. “The World Museum of Mining has preserved the stories of America’s biggest strength: hardworking people willing to risk everything in the pursuit of opportunity and freedom.” To view Representative Zinke’s February statement, click here.
U.S. Representative Troy Downing honored Baron Stroop of the Rosebud Mine with his statement. “This February, I’m proud to highlight Montana’s rich mining history and recognize a man who devoted his life to its preservation: Baron Stroop. Baron worked as a drag line operator at Rosebud Mine in Colstrip, Montana. In a job that demanded grit, skill, and long hours, Baron showed up every day with a relentless work ethic and a great pride in producing the energy that powers our communities,” Downing said in his remarks.
Themes for the upcoming months include: Agriculture and Food (March); News and Media (April); and Public Safety, Justice, and Law Enforcement (May).
