(Helena) – The Montana State Auditor’s Office has launched its first comprehensive review of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana in over a decade.
State Auditor and Insurance Commissioner James Brown announced the market conduct review to evaluate whether the state’s largest health insurer is fully complying with Montana laws and regulations. The extensive audit will dissect the company’s business practices, focusing closely on its marketing, underwriting, policyholder services, and claims handling.
The last time the agency finalized a review of the health care giant was in February 2014, covering activities that dated as far back as 2006. Commissioner Brown emphasized that a decade is far too long to wait between checks on a company insuring hundreds of thousands of residents.
State officials clarify that the launch of this review does not mean Blue Cross has violated any rules; rather, it serves as a routine audit to maintain a fair and competitive marketplace.
