FORT BELKNAP, Mont. (NMB) – Starting this fall, Aaniih Nakoda College will offer its first bachelor’s degree program.
The Bachelor of Science degree program that will be offered will be in Aaniiih Nakoda Ecology.
Through coursework, field-based instruction, internship opportunities and undergraduate research experiences, students will learn about the relationship between the Aaniinen and Nakoda nations and the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation. The goal of the program is for graduates to become effective caretakers and stewards of the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation and surrounding ancestral lands.
ANC President Carole Falcon-Chandler says the college has been working for years on getting a four-year degree program up and running.
“We’re just so excited. It’s something for our community to have people that are qualified to meet the needs of the community in addressing environmental concerns.”
Dean of Academic Affairs Sean Chandler adds that this new degree will give students a chance to give back to the community.
“It gives a lot of our community members the opportunity to advance their education and give back to our community in terms of sustaining our indigenous life ways and looking out for the health of not only our community, but our whole environment.”
