Aluminum Shortage Impacting Local License Plates

HELENA, Mont. (NMB) – The manufacturing of vehicle license plates at the Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge has come to a halt due to the ongoing aluminum shortage.

The Department of Corrections says that they are all out of the aluminum needed to make traditional plates and are not expecting another shipment until December.

This means Montana Correctional Enterprises is starting to make temporary plates. The design and numbers will continue to be placed on reflective sheets, but instead of applying them to aluminum, they will be placed in plastic sleeves.

When production resumes, those that were issued temporary plates will receive aluminum replacements.
