CHINOOK, Mont. (NMB) – The 4-H festivities at last week’s Blaine County Fair were well attended and received, according to organizers.
Blaine County MSU-Extension Agent Juli Snedigar says Saturday’s livestock auction recorded over $150,000 in sales.
The sales breakdown is below:
- Beef (21 market beef) – $72,217.85 (average of $3.16/lb.)
- Lamb (8 market lambs) – $3,911.60 ($3.80/lb.)
- Rabbit (3 pens) – $310.00
- Hogs ( 42 market hogs) – $74,024.80 ($6.30/lb.)
*The above figure does not include donations that were made in the form of resale animals to the Blaine County 4-H Foundation.*
“We were a little down from last year,” said Snedigar. “But we’re also the last sale of the year along the Hi-Line. We really appreciate all the supporters that come out and treat these kids really well every year.”
Included among the animals sold was three rabbits, which Snedigar is a first for the auction during her time working for Extension.
“It was the kids’ idea. There had been some families that had seen it in other places and they wanted to try it. They are all raising meat rabbits right now. So we included it this year. We had three separate exhibitors and they did very well on their projects.”
Snedigar says the programming benefited greatly from the new shaded area with grass at the show arena.
“It was amazing to have that there. We went from showing inside the old silver barn and then moving outside when we ran out of room. And having that show arena with grass, the pigs showed phenomenally. There was no fighting, they were happy to be there, and it just made it so much easier on those animals that were there. And then following the rain Friday night, we had to pivot and show beef in there as well. So it was just amazing to have that available to us. It made things so much easier.”
