The Blaine County Fair will wrap up its grandstand events with the demolition derby on Saturday. “Small Town Beat Down” gives three different difficulty classes the chance to be spotlighted in the fairgrounds.
New Media Broadcasters spoke with Chris Haider, one of the many people that puts on the demo derby, to ask about the format for what will be going on inside the grandstands and what new car classes will be displayed this year.
“We’ve got a class four. That’s like a heavy-built car,” Haider said. “We’re (also) going to run a class two filler. It’s a little lighter.”
“For the first time ever, we’re going to have a youth heat here in Chinook for ages 12-16 and then we also have a fan heat,” Haider continued. “A bunch of cars.”
“We are really just hoping we fill up the stands and have a great turnout,” Haider said.
For the professionals that Haider mentioned, the prize pool is significant. Fifth place will already make you $1,000 richer. Move up four spots to top dog and the grand prize earnings will be $10,000. Haider discussed how the five-figure winning prize came to be.
“Derby is getting harder and harder to compete,” Haider said. “So, we just knew we had to up the prizes. That’s something we couldn’t have done without local sponsors between (Chinook) and Havre and local Hi-Line businesses.”
“It took a whole crew to get this thing done,” Haider continued.
Small Town Beat Down, home of the $10,000 main class cash prize, will be happening on Saturday night at the Blaine County Fairgrounds. The show will begin at 6pm. Tickets cost $25 for adults and $15 for children.
