Havre, MT – The Havre high Blue Ponies girls’ and boys’ basketball teams swept the Fergus high school Golden Eagles Thursday night in two very different games.
The girls game saw the blue ponies jump out to an early lead and hold firm for 28-5 lead at the intermission. Coach Tommy Browns team continued their dominance in half number to come away with a 52-23 victory.
Ariana Gary played for the first time in since December 19 and lead all scorers with 15 points off the bench. Coach Brown spoke post-game to how excited the team was for Gary to join them back on the court.
“We we’re just so happy to have her back, [She’s] such a great kid. I think her teammates we’re happy to see her and happy that she played so well to so happy to have her back.”
Coach Brown’s Blue Ponies are 11-1 on the year and are in first place of the class A Northeastern Conference at 3-0.
The night cap for was a much closer game and a back-and-forth battle in the first half with the ponies leading after 16 minutes 29-25. The golden Eagles kept it close in the second half before Havre pulled away for a seven-point victory (58-51) on the backs of 18 points from Dax Oswalt and 16 points for Kash Keller.
Coach Burgess spoke highly his senior’s ability to score the basketball after the win. “Those two together is a two headed monster. You got your inside attack out of Kash, and you got Dax that’s able to get downhill and it’s really hard to stay in front of both of them.”
The blue Ponies boys are 4-8 on the season and are 2-1 in Northeast A conference play.
Havre High basketball travels to Sidney on Friday January 23, for another conference game at 6 and 7:30p.m.
