The Havre softball team is coming off a Northeastern A Division Championship crown over the weekend. The Blue Ponies went into divisionals as the #1 Seed and came out with a (3-2) late game thriller win over Billings Central in the championship.
With the #1 Seed of the East locked up for the State Tournament beginning Thursday, Coach Vigliotti speaks about the key factors in the Divisional Championship victory:
Havre High School softball coach Tony Vigliotti – “Well I think Ellie Verploegen (ver ploo gun) was great in the circle all weekend, and she just kind of…they scored two runs in the top of the first and she just kind of bowed her neck and kept us in the ballgame defensively. We played well and then we just kind of talked about ‘Hey, let’s just to put some balls in play, and see what happens’. And really, it took us ’til the sixth and seventh inning to do that. But credit to these girls, no quit in them at all. They’re going to go until there’s twenty one outs, and that’s what they did.”
Coach Vigliotti and the Lady Blue Ponies now shift their sights to the Class A State Softball Tournament to be held in Belgrade. When asked on the mindset of his team, he speaks about them playing the best ball of their season right now, which is where they want to be:
Vigliotti – “We’re playing our best softball at the end of the year, which is what we want to be doing. We’ve been pretty consistent all year, our pitching has been great, our defense has been really good, and we’re getting production up and down the lineup. So I think for us, if we can stay consistent, and just play the kind of softball that we know how to play, the results take care of themselves.”
The Blue Ponies begin their State Tournament journey on Thursday, May 25th when they play the winner of the Libby vs Fergus game which will be played at 11AM. The Blue Ponies hit the mound at 3PM after the winner is decided.
