The Chinook Sugarbeeters football team has been well rested after destroying Simms last Wednesday night by the final score of (58-7). New Media Broadcasters spoke with head coach Mike Jones and he was excited to talk about the execution that his team brought to the gridiron in all phases of that game.
“We had a bunch of kids step up in a bunch of roles,” Jones said. “Patrick (McKenzie), our backup QB, really stepped up.”
“He came in the game and executed,” Jones continued. “I mean, that’s a tough job for him (to) not get all the reps throughout the week and then be able to step up and do that.”
“It was really good to see that and I thought our boys did a really good job,” Jones said.
The final week of the regular season for the Beeters will conclude in Fort Benton, facing a 1-loss Longhorns squad. Seeding implications are on the line as Chinook trails Fort Benton in the loss column by one. Jones has not been trying to downplay the factors for which his team can clinch a playoff berth and said letting his team know about the scenarios can light a fire under them.
“I think the kids know the ramifications of the game,” Jones said. “I told them what they were so if that they want to achieve something, they need to go get it.”
“Really, instead of downplaying the week, we just told them, ‘Look what you’ve accomplished,'” Jones continued. “As a coaching staff, we always tell them, ‘If you do what we’re asking you to and you do it at a high level and work hard at it, then you’re going to set yourself up for a chance.'”
“That’s what they have this week,” Jones said. “A chance to do something. We’ve tried to put a game plan together this week for them to go achieve that.”
Chinook (6-2) will put its five-game winning streak on the line in a road contest against Fort Benton (6-1) when the teams meet on Friday night. Noah Friedman will have the call on KRYK-101.3FM and HiLineToday.com around 7pm.
