(Washington D.C.) – A new legislative proposal in Washington aims to restrict federal housing funds from jurisdictions that limit cooperation with immigration enforcement.
Montana Republican Congressman Troy Downing has introduced House Resolution 10222, also known as the No HUD Funding for Sanctuary Cities Act. The bill proposes to make self-designated sanctuary jurisdictions ineligible for grant funding administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Current federal law allows jurisdictions to receive HUD housing grants regardless of their level of cooperation with federal immigration officials. Congressman Downing introduced the legislation to end this practice, stating that federal tax dollars should not support areas that do not comply with federal immigration policy.
The bill will now move to a House committee for further consideration.
