CHINOOK, Mont. (NMB) – Cow Creek Reservoir in Blaine County will remain closed until sometime next week after an algal bloom was discovered near the north shore. Blaine County Sanitarian Ron Andersen says they will keep the reservoir closed as a precaution, as the dangerous cyanotoxins can remain in the water for up to two weeks after the algae has dissipated.
The exact date the reservoir will be reopened has yet to be determined, but Andersen says the cold weather helps prevent the algae from growing and producing the toxin.
He says caution signs will remain in the area after the reservoir has reopened to warn people about the dangers of algae blooms.
The algal bloom was spotted in Cow Creek Reservoir almost two weeks ago and the reservoir was closed.
