(Washington, D.C.) – The United States Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity announced the four winners of the American-Made High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Prize. This $200,000 prize was used to incentivize competitors to share new technology solutions that improve the performance and resilience of the U.S. energy grid.
The winners of the award are Richard Zhang at Virginia Tech for a Multi-Functional Intelligent Voltage-Source-Converter HVDC, SixPoint Materials, Inc. in Santa Barbara, CA for a Hybrid HVDC Breaker Using GaN Semiconductor, University of South Florida in Tampa, FL for a Generalized Dynamic Circuit Model Design for HVDC, and Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA for a Proactive Solid State Circuit Breaker for HVDC System Protection.
