(Havre) This past weekend there were multiple reports of dog bites in the Hill County Sheriff’s Report, which Animal Control Officer Peter Federspiel says is not an uncommon occurrence in the city of Havre.
Federspiel says the most common reason someone gets bitten is when they’re trying to break up two dogs fighting.
“The best thing to do is to not to panic and grab the dogs to try and separate them, especially by their collars. The best way to separate them is either by a leash or using some other object to get them separated. If nothing else works, grabbing their hind legs and pulling them back away from the other dog by their hind legs is the best way to do it.”
He also says that while it may be tempting, NOT interacting with unfamiliar dogs is the safest option for avoiding bad encounters and potentially being bitten. Federspiel says that many dog bite reports happen through a fence— meaning that people were likely attempting to pet a dog they weren’t familiar with and got bitten.
