Fake $20 Bills Make Rounds Through Havre

HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Counterfeit money has been making another round through Havre in the last week or so. Havre Police Lieutenant Aaron Witmer says they have been seeing mostly $20 bills that either clearly say movie money on them or have Chinese writing.

Witmer says they have made five or six arrests in the past week or so and are still looking for others they believe to be involved after receiving video surveillance. He says it’s been mostly convenience stores and casinos that have been hit. Many times the bill will be passed off in a stack of legitimate currency and the cashiers didn’t notice.

If cashiers were to inspect the bills, it would be clear that they are not legal tender. Witmer says the bills are such a poor copy of legitimate cash that they can hardly be called counterfeit, and are more like play money.

He believes that many of the bills may have been used in drug deals.
