Fascinating innovations are making organic farming more and more feasible in Montana and around the world. A local organic farmer Bob Quin explains one of the innovations currently used in organic farming.
“We have now a product called nosema locustae, it is a protozoa that is a little smaller than a bacteria, that very effectively controls grasshoppers. That was one of the things that convinced me to grow organic, 45 years ago was the success of that against grasshoppers in 1988.”-Bob Quin
Bob continues to explain the benefits of the new biological innovations.
“They don’t leave residues, and they don’t allow for the insects and the diseases to become resistant the way they do to chemicals, so you’re just using more and more chemicals, but get something that doesn’t necessarily irradicate, but it manages it so that it’s not harmful to your crop and doesn’t significantly reduce yields or productivity.”- Bob Quin
