The FDA released a statement on Thursday, October 26th warning the public against the use of probiotics in infants.
The FDA says in this statement that certain probiotic products, used in hospital settings, have contributed to invasive disease. The FDA is also aware of one infant death in 2023 as a result of this, as well has more than two dozen adverse incidents since 2018.
The FDA issued warning letters to Abbott Nutrition for their product Similac Probiotic Tri-Blend, and to Infinant Health for its product Evivo with MCT Oil.
The FDA has not approved any probiotic product for use as a drug or biological product in infants of any age.
