WASHINGTON, D.C. (NMB) – Congressman Greg Gianforte urged committee leaders to include federal recognition of the Little Shell Tribe in a larger, must-pass bill.
Gianforte asked leaders of the House Armed Service Committee to include his bill, the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians Restoration Act in the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act.
His bill restores the federal recognition of the Little Shell Tribe and allows the Tribe to purchase 200 acres of land to serve as its reservation. The legislation makes the Tribe eligible for federal resources for economic development, health, and education.
Gianforte led the bill to passage in the House in March this year.
The Little Shell Tribe petitioned the federal government in the 1930’s and 1940’s for a formal reservation and to be allowed to organized under the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934.
