Missoula, MT – In April of 2025 Governor Greg Gianforte amended house bill 350, changing which homeschool students have the ability to participate in MHSA extracurricular activities.
The amended bill that was first signed into law in 2021 and sponsored by republican senator Matt Regier of Kalispell, bans any homeschooled students who are non Montana state residents or are non-United States citizens from participating in Montana high school extracurricular activities. However, the law does not affect participation ability of foreign exchange students or students enrolled in MHSA schools.
Prior to Governor Gianforte’s amendment the original bill allowed all homeschooled Montana students to participate in MHSA activities.
The amended bill now states that “may prohibit or restrict the participation in extracurricular activities of a student attending a home school based on one or both of the following factors: (i) the student’s status as a United States citizen; and (ii) the student’s status as a Montana resident.”
