(Glacier National Park) – Two dead snowshoe hares found in Glacier National Park have tested positive for tularemia, a rare but serious bacterial disease. Park officials confirmed the infected animals were discovered late last month in the Many Glacier Valley area.
Tularemia occurs naturally and can infect wildlife, pets, and humans, typically spreading through insect bites, contaminated water, or contact with infected animals. While human cases are rare, the disease can cause severe illness with symptoms like fever, chills, and muscle aches.
Officials advise park visitors to use insect repellent, avoid touching wildlife carcasses, and drink only treated water. Anyone experiencing symptoms within two weeks of visiting the area should seek immediate medical attention.
