FORT PECK, Mont. (NMB) – Governor Greg Gianforte says he oppose a proposal from federal officials to alter water releases from Fort Peck Reservoir in order to boost populations of the endangered pallid sturgeon.
With much of eastern Montana in a drought, Gianforte worries that the proposal could lead to a lack of water for farmers in the summer months, while flooding them with an overabundance of water in the spring.
The proposal from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would alter water flows on a test basis along the Missouri River between Fort Peck and North Dakota’s Lake Sakakawea.
