The Hill County Superintendent of Schools is pleased to announce that Converse Calanday, a student at Gildford Colony School has competed and done well at the GeniusCerebrum International Spelling Olympiad.
This international contest drew students from 60 countries numbering 5,000 schools. Participation was based on grade level so Converse competed in Level 3 among 11,457 participants and scored in the upper 10% of these participants.
This is touted to be the world’s largest online Olympiad exam and is open to a worldwide registration. To prepare for the competition, students are given a list of 160 study words and from this list, 100 words are randomly selected at the time of competition. Participants do not know which word from the list they will receive.
Converse’s parents shared his study routine became a family event as they helped him ready for the competition. Any spare moments, even supper-time became a ritual where Converse studied words from the 160-word list. His parents also work at the school as part of the teaching staff as the lead teacher and paraprofessional.
