MALTA, Mont. (NMB) – At the end of August, the Great Plains Dinosaur Museum in Malta will host an adult field program where people can join paleontologists from the museum as they dig up dinosaur fossils in the area. Director of Paleontology Cary Woodruff says they will leave from the museum in the mornings from Monday, August 26 through Friday, August 30th and return in the evenings.
“So we’re going to teach you how to dig. We’re also going to teach you about the dinosaur you’re digging up. About the interval of time that it lived in, so about the Hell Creek Formation. And even about how paleontologists read rock, just like a book. Because, to study dinosaurs, we have to know a lot about biology and geology.”
Woodruff recommends bringing things like sunscreen and a camera.
“We provide lunch and water, and again all that information’s on our website. You know, folks are more than welcome to bring anything else they like. You know, if someone had dietary restrictions, we fully accommodate for that. Just let us know in advance. There’s information on the website that, you know, we like people, you know, things to bring, like sunscreen, a hat. One of my big ones is everyone has to wear closed-toed shoes.”
Those interested need to sign up in advance on their website, greatplainsdinosaurs.org. You can sign up for one or all of the days during the week and there is a fee associated to cover the expenses.
