The Havre boys’ basketball team is coming off a weekend sweep of Dawson County and Hardin from the Blue Pony Corral. New Media Broadcasters caught up with coach WaLynn Burgess and he said in particular that the Glendive game was a wakeup call for his squad, which found themselves down early in the first quarter and came back to rally for the win.
“(It was) the effort that the kids put into it,” Burgess said. “We started off that Glendive game really slow and out of sorts a little bit.”
“We had a conversation with about two or three minutes left in the first quarter what they’re willing to give for this team and they ended up deciding they wanted to play a little bit harder and by halftime, we had it tied up,” Burgess continued. “From there, we imposed our will (and) kept the pace.”
It will be a short turnaround for Havre, which is now (10-3) on the season. They will play against Malta (13-2) on Tuesday night at the Blue Pony Corral. In a rematch of the Dec. 12 game in Malta, the Mustangs led for virtually the entire contest until the Blue Ponies seized momentum with 4:20 to go down three to finish the game on a (15-3) run.
Burgess implores the public to come support the Blue Ponies because it will be a very evenly matched game.
“(Malta is) a really good team. Very guard heavy. Really well coached,” Burgess said. “We know it’s a good team going in (and) we like the challenges. We want to keep getting pushed.”
“Going against a team like Malta, you know they’re going to come in they’re going to play hard,” Burgess continued. “They’re going to give you some different looks on the defensive end. They’re going to push the pace.”
“Two very similar teams and it’s going to be a really good game,” Burgess said. “If anyone is bored on a Tuesday night, I think it’s going to be a really good game to watch.”
