HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Last week, the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce canceled the inaugural Bear Paw Marathon, which was scheduled for June 6th.
Julea Robbins, Executive Director of the Chamber, says the decision was made out of concern for the safety of the community.
“More than half of our participants are from out of town, and then 33 of those are from out of state. So it did come down to kind of a community thing also. We want to make sure that the Havre community stays safe and that we don’t bring any illness in that shouldn’t be here. And then make sure that the people that are traveling are also safe.”
Robbins says they plan to hold the marathon in 2021 as long as it is safe to do so.
“We are very excited about this marathon. We’re going to try our best to put it on. We had so much excitement about it from the community and from even those outside of the community. As of right now, we are still planning on having a marathon next year.”
Robbins says decisions have not been made about other upcoming events, such as Living History Day, Sounds on the Square, and Festival Days.
