Havre football will finally be playing a game this week. After months of practice and two-a-days, the Blue Ponies are ready to embark on their 116th football season.
New Media Broadcasters spoke with head coach Jake Eldridge to get a recap on how last weekend’s “Blue/White Scrimmage” went in front of the Blue Pony Stadium crowd.
“Takeaway No. 1 is that we came out of it healthy and that’s what you always want when you’re scrimmaging at the end of fall camp before you get into your zone for game week,” Eldridge said. “No. 2, (the game) was very completive (and) great to be able to see our first team be able to work together and compete in a live situation.”
“(We went) through our checks and our audibles,” Eldridge continued. “Just being able to run the systems on both sides of the ball was great to be able to get that work in.”
“Then we had a great opportunity for a lot of the young guys to go out there and show us what they can do,” Eldridge said.
The Ponies open up the 2024 season at Hardin, which saw a (43-12) blowout in the reverse fixture to begin 2023. Eldridge said what it will take to hand the Bulldogs a seventh straight loss in the series as his team looks to start the season on a high note.
“Taking care of ourselves, first and foremost,” Eldridge said. “The first game out, you really don’t know what the other team is going to do. They could have a completely new coaching staff or a whole new offense and defense and there’s always going to be new turnover with players.”
“Going into this (game), we’re really focusing on us and what we can do to execute on each side of the ball and how we can be the best football players we can be at our positions,” Eldridge continued.
The Havre-Hardin football game is taking place on Friday with kickoff around 7pm. Listen to a feed through KOJM-610AM and HiLineToday.com.
