Havre girls’ basketball is officially back with practices underway and game time near. After having a team that went all the way to the state semifinals a season ago, the Ponies return All-State players Amaya Jarvis and Ariana Gary for their junior seasons.
For the first time since 2007, there will be a new head coach on the sidelines. New Media Broadcasters spoke with first-year leader Tommy Brown, who said how everything has been going so far.
“We’re really happy with our girls’ efforts so far,” Brown said. “Our staff, we’ve been talking (and) it’s been very evident that the kids are eager each day and have been longing to get in the gym.”
“We’re focused on one drill, every rep, one step at a time on getting the basics down,” Brown continued. “The focus and intensity in practice has been really great. We’re pretty pleased.”
Brown’s Ponies will be challenged from the jump, taking on a Custer County team that has returning talent and will be ready to go with a dominant senior class. Brown said what his expectations are ahead of the road trip.
“They’re a good team, so we expect a good, competitive ball game,” Brown said. “(We’re) making sure we’re prepared to go up and play a good conference team and get ready to play in our first game this weekend in Miles City. First game of the year!”
Brown will look for win No. 1 as the Havre girls’ basketball coach when his team will go to Miles City and face the Cowgirls. Tipoff is scheduled for 4pm on Saturday and a feed will be broadcast on KOJM-610AM, 98.3FM, and HiLineToday.com.
