It’s time for Havre golf to come back from the almost two-week long layoff since the last competition. Coach Dennis Murphy and the Blue Pony boys’ and girls’ have been working on putting and approach shots since New Media Broadcasters last caught up with the team. Now, the attention turns to two golf courses that are truly special for coach Murphy.
He first told New Media Broadcasters about the team’s opening week challenge, the Jawbone Classic, which is in his hometown of Harlowton. He also gave a preview of the little wrinkle in the play that will be taking place on the golf course.
“The Jawbone Creek Classic is kind of a fun tournament for us,” Murphy said. “It’s Havre, Lewistown, and Livingston. We get together for a little triangular and we take a little bit of a deviation from the normal play.”
“This is actually a match play situation,” Murphy continued. “We’ll match our kids up in competition that are comparable in skill levels, different than stroke play, which we play during the year.”
“That’s always a fun tournament for our kids,” Murphy said. “Harlowton’s golf course is a gem (and) my hometown. (I) always look forward to going back to that course.”
Havre was able to add a tournament in between the next long layoff, which would have lasted for nine days. Instead, the Ponies will be on the road later in the week to play in Lewistown. Coach Murphy gave his thoughts on the Elks Pine Meadows in Fergus County.
“Going to Fergus to play at the Elks Golf Course, what a challenge,” Murphy said. “The greens there are very tough. An area we need to work on is putting.”
“That will definitely challenge us,” Murphy continued. “We look to playing that course. It’s always in great shape. They always make it difficult on us by pin placement.”
“I’m looking forward to seeing where we’re at (by) the end of next week,” Murphy said.
The match play Jawbone Classic in Harlowton gets going on Tuesday morning at 10am, while the tournament in Lewistown will be on Friday. New Media Broadcasters will have scores from each Havre High golfer once the results come in.
