The Havre golf teams finished up the last tournaments of the regular season in Billings and Laurel over the weekend. New Media Broadcasters asked head coach Dennis Murphy to sum up his positive thoughts as the postseason looms for his clubs.
“It gave us an opportunity to see where stacked up against everybody,” Murphy said. “Based upon the results, we’re right in the mix being able to qualify for the next level.”
“(The) play of our kids, both on the boys’ and the girls’s side was pretty consistent, so that’s a good sign, especially this late in the year,” Murphy continued. “Hopefully, we will continue that this week.”
It’s go time now for Havre golf, which will be back out on that same course in Laurel for the 2024 Divisional Tournament against all the Eastern ‘A’ schools. Murphy said the golf course that his teams will be playing on for the second time in as many weeks reminds him of home at Prairie Farms, so he feels like his players can qualify in bunches for the state tournament.
“The Laurel golf course is a fine course. It’s a difficult course,” Murphy said. “It’s a little bit in some respects like ours out at Prairie Farms.”
“Where it’s tight, you have to keep the ball in the middle of the fairway, otherwise you’re going to have to deal with trees,” Murphy continued. “(Laurel has) a lot of sand and other obstacles that are out there that we don’t normally see.”
“Being able to play it back-to-back weeks, hopefully last week, we got some of the anxiety out of the way,” Murphy said. “We can relax and play it because there won’t be anything new.”
New Media Broadcasters will have results following the Havre golf divisional round, which gets going in the morning on Friday.
