The Havre High golf season will be the first to kick off in just a couple of weeks. New Media Broadcasters got the chance to speak with head coach Dennis Murphy to hear about what his offseason has been like in order to strengthen the program and how with less than two weeks until the first practice, how players are ramping up.
“I had a great opportunity to go to the National Coaches Clinic in Bismarck (North Dakota) and spend some time with those coaches out there to pick their brains,” Murphy said. “Hopefully, (I) picked up some things that will help our program here (in Havre).”
“I was enjoying the summer myself personally,” Murphy continued. “The season begins in (less than two weeks). Players are now really starting to more concentrate on playing.”
“They were enjoying the summer, too,” Murphy said. “Now, they’re starting to get ready for the golf season by getting out on the course more often.”
On a totally different subject but still pertaining to the interviewee, Murphy was in Great Falls over the weekend to receive the Montana Coaches Association “Service Award”. He explained what the honor meant to him and how his decades of association with MCA propelled him to this achievement.
“The service award is an award that they give that’s been with the organization for a long period of time,” Murphy said. “I was a board member and have been on that staff for 15 years. This is kind of the stepping down from that role.”
“Getting recognized for the years of services with the Montana Coaches Association is obviously a great honor because it’s something that’s very dear to my heart, that part of it for 40-plus years,” Murphy continued. “To be recognized by my peers with the amount of service I got is rewarding.”
