HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – The Montana Farmers Union visited the 4-H Chuckwagon in Havre on Tuesday as part of their Rebuilding Food Resiliency Tour.
The program lasted nearly three hours, with a 45 minute chunk spent on discussing a proposed Premium Processing Co-Op.
The leading candidate for the site is a five-acre plot of land in the Montana Agro-Energy Industrial Park just southwest of Havre.
The plan calls for live-to-package certified processing of beef, hog, bison and sheep throughout the year.
A trailer has already been purchased for this Co-Op.
The tentative timeline calls for the facility to be operational by this winter, but there are still plenty of steps that need to be taken before it becomes a reality.
Necessary steps include electing a board of directors, approving the by-laws and officially selecting a site.
This would be a member owned co-op, but non-members would have the ability to use the facility if there are available slots.
At its start, the facility will only have the capacity to process a few head of animal a day, with the potential to eventually process over a dozen head of animal in a day.
