Havre Softball Drops Two at Fergus Tournament

The Havre softball team concluded play at the Fergus Invite on Saturday, losing back-to-back games to Laurel and Columbia Falls. The Ponies dropped an (11-6) offensive slugfest to the Locomotives, while the Wildcats won, (11-6), and got off to a great start and didn’t allow them to come back.

The first game was tied at three after one inning with pitcher Rachel Jette launching a two-run homer and third baseman Kamree Oliver singling to give Havre some runs early on. The Blue Ponies took their second lead of the game in the next frame as right fielder Elle Verploegen knocked in first baseman Ainsley Courtnage on an RBI single. However, Laurel surpassed them in the bottom half and went on to outscore Havre for the rest of the game, (8-2).

The second game was an up-and-down one for the Ponies, who were down (7-0) early but ended up scoring four runs in the fourth inning on a Brenna Hanson grand slam to make the contest a 3-run game. The Wildcats equaled that total in the bottom of the inning. Verploegen and Jette drove in the other two runs on the afternoon.

Havre softball (4-3) will be in action again on Tuesday when they host Glasgow at Sixth Avenue Memorial Field. JV is up first with a 3:30 first pitch and varsity will follow around 5:30.
