Havre Softball Season Ends After Splitting State Tournament Results

The Havre Blue Ponies Softball Team played two consolation games in the Class A State Tournament on Saturday. While they beat Fergus in the first contest in the morning (7-5), the Lady Blue Ponies couldn’t get it done against Billings Central Catholic in the second contest and took a (7-4) loss, ending their season.

In Game 1, Havre answered back after falling behind (1-0) in the first inning. The Blue Ponies stormed back with four runs in the third inning. Camille Keeley got an RBI double on the first pitch she saw. Molly Huse knocked in two runs with a double of her own, and Jersi Morse also had an RBI single.

Fergus made things tense in the sixth inning, scoring 3 runs to make it a (6-5) ballgame. But Elle Verploegen stood tall in the circle.

Not only did the right-hander record 12 strikeouts, but she also helped her own cause by driving in an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. She closed the door by striking out two of the last three batters she saw in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory.

With the win, Havre would need to beat Billings Central Catholic again to stay alive. The Rams had been the opponent in the win to clinch the Divisional Championship just eight days earlier.

The first inning was an offensive explosion by both clubs as it was (3-2) after a frame. Two singles and a fielder’s choice gave the Blue Ponies the early edge.

However, it would be the Rams to score the game’s next three runs to tie the game at 3. Havre regained the lead in the fifth inning with an RBI double by Keeley, but the damage was done in the bottom half of the inning when Madge Prill and GG Hastings went yard to cap off a 4-run inning and move on in the tournament.

Havre softball finishes the season 21-6. Congratulations to the Blue Pony players and coaches on a remarkable campaign, which included the divisional crown.
