The Havre softball team had its schedule moved around earlier this week and played a doubleheader on Saturday. The team would square off against conference opponents Sidney and Dawson County with both games taking place in Sidney. Fergus ended up playing the other team Havre did not so that the schedules would align for all parties involved.
The first game was close early on, but the Blue Ponies used a six-run fourth inning to pull away and beat Sidney, (12-2). First baseman Ainsley Courtnage continued her stellar play of late and knocked in four of the runs, while third baseman Kamree Oliver was not far behind with three RBIs.
The Ponies used small ball to win this game, recording six doubles as a team and having nine of their 10 batters record multiple base knocks. Rachel Jette got the ball for coach Tony Vigliotti’s club and threw a complete game, scattering two runs on five hits in seven innings and striking out seven Golden Eagles. As a result, she picked up her first win of the season.
In game two against Glendive, the results fared the same with Havre dominating, (12-1) in five innings. The story in this contest was pitcher Elle Verploegen, who allowed only one run and one walk while striking out eight Red Devils batters. She improved to (6-1) on the season after the win.
The Ponies were able to score four runs each in the final two innings to enact the mercy rule. Four players drove in 10 of the runs; Jette with three RBI, left fielder Brenna Hanson with three, Oliver with two, and catcher Camille Keeley with two.
Havre is now (7-3) on the season and will be back to tournament-like action next weekend in Frenchtown at the Bette Paskey Memorial Invite.
