The Havre High School Track and Field season will be underway in a couple of days and there is optimism surrounding the program because of a multitude of factors.
New Media Broadcasters spoke with head coach Kari Filius and she broke down her returning talent and up-and-comers for each side of the coin. She decided to start with the boys, who have more experience with relays and also with the athletes that excel at certain events.
“We have a really big group of senior boys that I’m really excited about,” Filius said. “(Our) relays have been real close that top notch at state and they’re all back.”
“Caleb Tomac for the boys, distance running,” Filius continued. “He’s worked hard this winter (and) he’s going to do awesome.”
“Tate Nelson finally gets to compete this year. He’s had a real good football season and he was injured last (Track and Field) year,” Filius said. “Tommy Lewis is back with our throwing and he did real well last year. Javon Big Knife is our freshman boy with distance.”
Filius then said what the Havre girls lack in experience they make up for in potential.
“I’ve got a small group of girl seniors,” Filius said. “Kyanna Jarvis, I’m really excited about her. There are some juniors. Kaydance Reiter and Hailey Gingery (as well as) Macee May, Ariana Gary, Amaya Jarvis, Ella Harbor.”
“Our freshman crew, we have a really good runner coming up in Ashlyn Ford,” Filius continued.
What makes this all gel together is the weather, which was the way it is now last year, but was perfect last week when spring practices got underway.
“It’s been a big difference for both mental and physical,” Filius said. “It’s nice to get outside right away and have that good weather.
“(To) be able to have the whole track and the field to work on all the events,” Filius continued. “It’s been a lot nicer than the last couple of years.”
“I’m really excited,” Filius said. “We have good numbers and we should have a great season.”
Ironically, the first event of the spring has been canceled as the track team was supposed to be in Cut Bank on Saturday, but will not be competing due to the incoming weather conditions.
