Laurel Mayor Dies of COVID-19

LAUREL, Mont. (NMB) – The Billings Gazette reports that the Mayor of Laurel has died of COVID-19 complications.

Tom Nelson was appointed as Mayor in 2018 and had been running for re-election.

City Council President Emelie Eaton had been handling the duties of Mayor while Nelson was sick for the last month, and is expected to remain in that role for the rest of the calendar year.

Those that have already voted are not allowed to change their vote. If Nelson wins, there will likely be an appointment made in January and another election in 2023.

If one of the three other candidates wins, they will likely be sworn into a four-year term in January.
