LEWISTOWN, Mont. (NMB) – The Lewistown Police Department has identified the man that fatally shot himself during a standoff over the weekend as 40-year-old Jeremy D. Kelsey.
A press release states that at 7 PM on Saturday evening, Police responded to a reported domestic disturbance at the 100 block of Main Street.
When Police arrived, a female exited the residence, while Kelsey barricaded himself inside, armed with a firearm.
Police say Kelsey told Officer’s he had his firearm pointed at them through the door. An arrest warrant for Kelsey was than obtained for Strangulation of Partner or Family Member.
Lewistown PD then contacted Great Falls PD to have them deploy a tactical team to assist. While they were on their way, the Central Montana Dispatch Center contacted mental health professionals and transferred them to Kelsey’s cell phone.
Kelsey spoke to three professionals for a total of around two hours.
Great Falls PD then arrived and unsuccessfully attempted to negotiate with Kelsey for an extended period of time, but he ended up fatally shooting himself.
The initial investigation indicates that Kelsey died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by the Montana Department of Criminal Investigations and Petroleum County Coroner’s Office.
No other injuries were reported.
