The MSU-Northern Lights’ football team has undergone a construction of the roster like none that has been seen in Havre since the days of Walt Currie and Marc Samson decades ago. Head coach Jerome Souers is optimistic about the recruits that he has put together so far to create a group of talent that will try to succeed on the football field.
“We have signed and committed 38 new members to the program,” Souers said. “We’re in the process of recruiting more.”
“A lot of these (players) have been researched; good character, developmentally strong additions to our program,” Souers continued. “We ultimately want to get our number into the high 40s (and) 50s. That puts our team roster over 100.”
“(With) the goal of ours and to be starting year three with that kind of depth, it’s a major accomplishment,” Souers said.
Not only were scholarships offered, but the Lights held a “Walk-On” day back in late February to give people an opportunity to pursue something that might not have necessarily been on their radar. MSU-N will also hold another session for potential walk-ons during the spring practice run. Coach Souers shared why it’s paramount to have walk-ons in the fold not only for the football program, but for the university as a whole.
“(MSU-Northern) is a unique educational opportunity from the trades to the different programs that are available here,” Souers said. “We seek to increase the enrollment of the university by bringing in young people (who) want to play college football.”
“We’re trying to be more external in our approach (to) broadcast that we have room and are looking for guys,” Souers continued. “This will be our biggest class for sure. It’s a great addition to what we are doing.”
The Lights will be holding spring ball activities from April 1st to the 20th.
