LEWISTOWN, Mont. (NMB) – The Fergus County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed a man was arrested late last week based on allegations that he caused the South Moccasin Fire that scorched over 12,800 acres last October north of Lewistown.
Shaun Lee Kuhnhausen has been charged with the felony of negligent arson and the misdemeanors of negligent arson and negligent endangerment. He is in custody at the Fergus County Detention Center on $25,000 bond.
Court documents allege that the fire, which started on the night of October 3rd, was sparked after leaving a fire in a fire ring unattended and not properly extinguishing it. Embers from the fire, which began on property the suspect has a mining claim, escaped from the fire ring and ignited dry timber and grass that was nearby.
