(Boulder) – Students are back in school and the Montana Highway Patrol is urging motorists to re-acquaint themselves with school bus and school zone laws.
Officers reported over 100 school bus violations last school year, and Colonel Kurt Sager says that number needs to drop to ensure student safety.Drivers are reminded to prepare to slow down when amber lights flash, and stop at least 30 feet away when red lights blink.
If a bus stops at a four-way intersection, vehicles are prohibited from turning or passing in any direction.On two-lane roads and non-divided highways, all traffic must stop. On divided highways with a raised median, traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus must halt.
Those who ignore the extended stop arms, are reminded that reckless driving penalties start at 285 dollars for a first offense, and jump to 785 dollars for a second ticket.
