(Havre) – Montana Farmers Union is teaming up with MSU Northern and Premium Processing to bring a new level of education and work program into the area.
Matt Rains, MFU’s Chief of Staff tells us more about the collaboration.
“Montana Farmer’s Union has been instrumental in getting the new meat processing facility in Havre, Montana Premium Processing and Cooperative set up, up and going and one of the key reasons that we chose Havre for that project is MSU Northern was very excited about the idea of starting a meat science curriculum at the University there. And so, in order to get that program up and going, as we we’ve been getting the facility going the university has been working on a way to develop their curriculum which could start as an apprenticeship and grow into and associates and possibly a bachelor’s degree program.”-Rains
As a result, MFU has started a scholarship program, which offers a full year’s tuition at Northern. Rains revealed the inaugural recipient of the scholarship.
“We had a great young man, Isaac Lauger from Fairfield. He actually said he didn’t plan on going to college but because of this opportunity it peaked his interest. He wanted to get into the meat science, butchering, processing kind of field and so, it’s allowed him to pursue and education after high school that he wasn’t actually intending on doing.”-Rains
