MSU-Northern rodeo kicked off its spring season in Bozeman with two rodeos in four nights. New Media Broadcasters broke it all down with head coach Doug Kallenberger, who said what it took to produce the results on the big stage and how they can tie that together to do even better next time.
“They showed really good poise there,” Kallenberger said. “We brought over half of our team back for the short round (in the second rodeo).”
“Georgia Orahood was outstanding from top to bottom,” Kallenberger continued. “Kenda Statham made both short rounds in the goat tying.”
“What we need to do is just have to focus up and don’t let those top-10 short rounds get in our heads and finish the game,” Kallenberger said.
For the first time in two seasons, MSU-Northern gets to host a Big Sky Region rodeo in the Bigger Better Barn. Kallenberger said what aspects of the home fixture will be paramount for visitors who wish to support his programs as well as how preparations have been going for his teams.
“The community of Havre has been great and so have the surrounding communities,” Kallenberger said. “Everybody that surrounds a 50-mile radius is always supporting us.”
“We’ll have a big screen. We’ve got some opening acts. We’ve got some sheep riding to go along with (the MSU-Northern rodeo),” Kallenberger continued. “So along with just showcasing our college rodeo talent, we’re trying to showcase some of the local talent and youth.”
“(We’re) just (having) a good time and enjoy(ing) it,” Kallenberger said. “I felt like the kids have had a good week of practice and they’re focused up in front of the home crowd and be ready to roll.”
The MSU-Northern home rodeo kicks off on Friday night and runs through Saturday night. Each performance at the Great Northern Fairgrounds begins at 7pm and tickets will be $15 at the door. $10 tickets will be sold to MSU-N students and staff and kids who are 10 years of age and younger get in for free.
