MSU-Northern held its annual holiday basketball camp on Friday. Kids from kindergarten through eighth grade took part in drills, games, and won prizes. New Media Broadcasters was there to ask head men’s coach Shawn Huse about why this time of year is so special for the community and his players.
“Just a good time for the kids and players to interact,” Huse said. “(It’s an) important time of the season.”
“They’re going to have some home time here coming up until school starts again,” Huse continued. “(Giving) them a chance to get out and do some activates and, oh yeah, learn some basketball and win some prizes playing basketball.”
“I think all of that is really fun and really important this time of year,” Huse said.
Northern women’s coach Chris Mouat was also on hand and he discussed the dynamic of having both teams present for the day.
“I think it’s good we have kids who get along and work hard in the gym,” Mouat said. “They want to put on something fun for the kids, so it’s just exciting to see everybody getting back into that basketball mode after a few days of holidays.”
Lights forward Oskar Pula was one of the “coaches” of camp. The Chinook native said how happy he was to be able to give back after being a camper in the past.
“It’s pretty cool,” Pula said. “I’ve come to these before and I know a few of these kids.”
The Lights and Skylights will now get ready for conference play after coming back from Christmas break for a singleheader next week against Montana Western at the Armory Gym. Stay tuned to New Media Broadcasters for more coverage as the games approach next Saturday.
