HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Students at Montana State University-Northern have organized a food drive for students staying on campus during the upcoming Thanksgiving and winter break.
Riley Mortenson, Associated Students of MSUN President, says the food drive runs through November 11th, with campus-affiliated groups going around town seeking donations.
“The groups on campus who feel comfortable walking door-to-door will be given a location around town, given a map for that area and will walk door-to-door getting food or monetary donations off people’s porches.”
It is a friendly competition between clubs, organizations and sports teams, and Mortensen says she would like this to become an annual event.
This year, the groups that raise the most pounds of food and the most money will each receive a plaque engraved with the names of those in the group. The plaques will be hung in the SUB ballroom.
Donations are also being accepted at collection boxes around town or can be dropped off at the Student Health Services’ area of the Student Union Building on campus.
The goal is to ensure students staying on campus have access to quality food by keeping the campus food pantry, which was created last spring, stocked.
Key food items they are especially seeking include cereal, crackers, peanut butter, jelly, rice, pasta, canned soup or vegetables, tomato sauce, ramen noodles, canned fruit, dry beans and coffee. They are also accepting donations of non-food items such as soap, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and feminine products.
