The MSU-Northern wrestling team is facing a familiar opponent on Friday. The team is set to go down to Great Falls to take on the Providence Argos, who beat them, (27-10) back on Nov. 8 in Havre. Lights coach Tyson Thivierge told New Media Broadcasters how the team has coped in the weeks since those duals and which group would be the key to a spark.
“I think after (The Grand View Open), we took some steps forward. After the dual with Providence and the Spokane Open, I think we took a couple of steps back,” Thivierge said.
“This team just has to find their identity. There’s a lot of new guys in the lineup,” Thivierge continued. “Everything is a process. Right now, they’re learning and finding out what works for each individual.”
The Lights have two duals on Friday, followed by “The Battle of the Rockies”, which is also in Great Falls on Saturday. Coach Thivierge said that this two-day stretch is only a test for what comes later in the season.
“I expect them to wrestle better than they do on Friday,” Thivierge said. “Hopefully, we go in there and win two duals on Friday.”
“You have to build throughout weekends,” Thivierge continued. “They’ve moved (the national tournament) back to a three-day tournament.
You’ve got to stay motivated for three consecutive days making weight,” Thivierge said. “Tournaments only get tougher the longer you stay in the tournament, so these guys have to start seeing that. They have to figure out how to hydrate (and) how to get energy in between matches.”
