(MSUN) Each year, MSU-Northern students recognize outstanding faculty and staff through the Golden N Awards—honoring those who go above and beyond to support student success, inspire learning, and build meaningful connections across campus. This year’s recipients reflect the very best of Northern, demonstrating excellence in teaching, mentorship, and student engagement. This year’s recipients are Aaron Riggin, Nicholus Despot, and Valerie Guyant.
Aaron Riggin received the Golden N for Excellence in Teaching, an award that celebrates faculty who show exceptional dedication in the classroom. An assistant professor in the College of Technical Sciences, Riggin is known for his high standards, hands-on teaching style, and unwavering commitment to student success. Students describe him as approachable and deeply invested in their growth, often going out of his way to provide extra time, mentorship, and opportunities to ensure they succeed both in the classroom and in their future careers.
Nicholus Despot was honored with the Name and Story Award, which recognizes faculty or staff who foster a strong sense of belonging and connection for students. A professor in the Integrated Health Science program, Despot is known for making learning relevant and accessible while building meaningful relationships with students. Whether supporting student-athletes, checking in on students’ well-being, or making himself available beyond the classroom, Despot consistently creates an environment where students feel valued, supported, and connected.
Valerie Guyant received the Inspirational Educator Award, recognizing her lasting impact through teaching, advising, and mentorship. An associate professor of English and Literature, Guyant has been a trusted mentor to students since 2016. Known for her compassion and accessibility, she consistently makes time for students, offering guidance, encouragement, and support both inside and outside the classroom. Her ability to inspire confidence and foster growth has made a lasting impression on countless Northern students.
