HELENA, Mont. (NMB) – The Montana Chapter of the National Alliance for Mental Illness has announced the recipients of their Hero Awards, and two lawmakers from north-central Montana were among the honorees.
State Representative Jonathan Windy Boy received a Hero Award for his work helping develop the Community Health Aide Program with partners from Fort Belknap and other tribal communities.
According to a press release, Community Health Aides can serve critical roles in providing basic medical and behavioral health care services. They can also conduct preventative dental care, health screenings, in-home care and other services.
U.S. Senator Jon Tester also was also given a Hero Award for his work improving veterans mental health. Tester has partnered with NAMI Montana and others to develop the bipartisan Commander John Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Health Care Improvement Act. This bill was introduced into the U.S. Senate Committee for Veteran’s Affairs this past March.
