The University of Providence swept MSU-Northern in basketball on Thursday night. The No. 16 Lady Argos grabbed a (69-55) victory, while the Argos beat the Lights, (76-66)
The Lady Argos got 20 points out of their star grad transfer guard, Ashlee Maldonado, who hit a 3-pointer with 8:57 to go in the first quarter to break a (2-2) tie and Providence never trailed after that. They took the game over in the second quarter, outscoring Northern, (23-8). Maldonado was one of three Argos in double-figures, with two freshman, Keanna Salave’a and Monique Carter, combining for 27 points. Salave’a also grabbed 12 rebounds to give her a double-double. Northern got out rebounded, (35-25), but one bright spot was redshirt junior forward Savannah Toms, who led the Skylights with 15 points and eight rebounds. She was joined in double-figures by redshirt senior guard Jalen Callender, who picked up 12 points.
Like the women, the Providence men took it to their opponent, outscoring the Lights in the paint, (42-26) while shooting 50% from the field. Reigning Frontier Conference “Player of the Week” Davien Harris-Williams scored 17 points, while Jaylin Burton dropped 17 of his own off the bench for the Argos. Senior guard Zack Martinez continued his great season with 18 more points in the losing effort for Northern. JJ Thomas played his best game since coming back from injury, chipping in 16 points.
What’s next for Northern is a road trip to Helena to take on the Carroll College Fighting’ Saints on Saturday. Skylights take the floor with the No. 6 team in the country at 2pm followed by the Lights and Saints at 4. Listen to both those games on KPQX-92.5FM.
